South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) , Thursday 18 July to Saturday 17 August, celebrates South Asian cultures, histories, and communities.
The month seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that continue to link the UK with South Asia. South Asian culture has made a significant impact on Britain in various aspects, such as food, clothing, music, words, and the overall ambiance of our towns and cities including St Albans when the first of pinners of our community settled and called it home in the eary seventies.
And for the first time SAHM will be celebrated in St Albans From 18th July to 17th August. South Asian Heritage Month, will take over the St Albans Museum + Gallery: With events including free poetry workshops for young people and adults. Places are limited so book in advance here.
FREE TO BE ME
This South Asian Heritage Month, ‘Free to be me’, Photo exhition celebrates the rich tapestry of South Asian culture across our communities in St Albans. This history is reflected in our vibrant local communities, which showcase a diversity of cultural practices, art forms, and philosophies.
Curated by Preet Kaur Cox of StART (St Albans Rainbow Trail), this exhibition celebrates the creativity and talent of just some of the incredible local South Asian artists and creatives. Their contributions not only enrich our cultural landscape but also embody the spirit of being ‘Free to be me’, embracing individuality and cultural heritage in unity.
The work of the following local St Albans City & District creatives have been displayed outside St Albans Museum & Gallery: Monir Ali, Preet Kaur Cox, Suman Gujral, Amna Rehan, Arti Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Syeda Maham Batool, Munazza Amir and Meera. The open air Exhibtion is free, at the museum.
There is also a drop-in and free Mini Mela, a South Asian Festival on Saturday 10 August, at the Assembly Room, Museum + Gallery 11am-4pm. This includes craft activities, cultural clothing demonstrations, mehndi designs and a mandala installation you can add to during the day.
South Asian Heritage Month, is a beautiful display of the rich and proud South Asian heritage that has blended into the British way of life, contributing to the diversity of our nation.
