TRY NEW SKILLS at the 20th St Albans Ansar Scouts Open Day

Did you know that Scouting is growing? Boys and girls aged 4 to 17 are looking to join Scouts and to keep pace with the demand for places, the 20th St Albans Ansar Scouts are looking for more volunteers to be a part of the team.

Scouting provides over 250 activities for children and young people. These range from Camping to cooking, Map reading and pioneering to Canoeing and community-based activities. It also gives them opportunities to learn and develop skills for life. These include independence, leadership, problem-solving, self-confidence, social skills and teamwork.

In a recent survey, 90% of parents thought their children would benefit from learning skills for life. In another survey, 88% of Scouts said they had tried activities in Scouts they had never done before.

Rahima , Aged 7, A Beaver Scout said “ I love doing scouts because it is so much fun, but at the same time it teaches you to have skills that you will need for the future.  They don’t just teach you skills they also play games and go on very fun trips!”

20th St Albans Ansar Scouts are seeking passionate volunteers to make a difference in the lives of young Muslims as leaders, but it can also be doing a role in the background. Roles in the background include being a Trustee helping with IT, administration or fund raising to name but a few.

Group Lead Volunteer, Monir Ali, “When I joined as a volunteer, I didn’t think I had the skills and experience, to support young people in Scouting activities, how wrong I was. From the outset, with support from the district team, and fellow scout leaders, I quickly learned things that were out of my comfort zone, like fire lighting, bush crafting, and enjoying the great outdoors. But the biggest joy I get is Seeing young people and other adults going through the same journey and gaining valuable life experiences and memories, and making a difference to people’s lives and giving back to my community in St Albans.”   He added, “Seeing a child achieve something, whether it’s making a meal, Paddle Boarding, or getting to the top of a climbing wall, will always bring a smile to your face.” Monir Added, “For adults it’s a great opportunity to share their knowledge, hobbies and skills and to help young people develop. Volunteering gives you a sense of purpose, a great deal of pride and satisfaction and helps us give something back to the community.”

The Group is having an open evening for Volunteers and Young People on Thursday, October 10, at Cottonmill Community Centre, Old Oak, AL1 2EF, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. (There will be facilities for both Magrib and Isha Prayers.) Pop along, Meet and chat with current leaders and scouts to learn about the rewarding experiences of volunteering and the positive impact you can have on young people.
