Generations: Stories of A South Asian St Albans

A new temporary exhibition, Generations: Stories from South Asian St Albans, opens at St Albans Museum &Gallery in July 2025. The exhibition will celebrate the rich cultural diversity and contributions made by the South Asian Community in St Albans, and will aim to trace history from the earliest arrivals in St Albans from the 50s to now.

The Museum is looking for members of the local communities and individuals with a connection to South Asia to get involved in taking part, sharing their stories and shaping the exhibition.

The Museum particularly need help with:
Oral histories – People who have an interesting story to tell, about their experiences in St Albans – could be someone who came across in the 70s 60s and their experiences, or young people growing up now and how they see their time in St Albans, these will be recorded interviews, and will be recorded in May and June.

Photographs – They would like to see your pictures. Themes include: Vintage Photo Album (pics from the 1970s. 80s and 90s), and much older photographs back to the early 1900s. Also looking for pics showing  ‘cultural activity’ in St Albans e.g. Eid celebrations, Holi celebrations, henna, food, celebrations of all kinds, sport + games. – so dust down those photoalbums and see what you can share.

Objects – again, Objects to loan from communities and others – for ‘What did you bring?’ and ‘Fusion Fashion’, cooking pots, the works, things that give a flavour of our dual cultural lives.
