International Day of Older People

International Day of Older Persons is marked around the world annually on 1st October.  For many years St Albans City and District Council have held events and activities in the month of October to celebrate the day, bring together services and to recognise the talents and contributions of Older People

This year, the council are organising three Older Peoples Day events in the district with the help of community partners. These are free open events with stalls, refreshments and activities.

The first event is Wednesday 19 October 10-1pm at the Healthy Hub in St Albans (The St Albans District Healthy Hub is a free one-stop shop for health and wellbeing information, advice and support operating out of the Civic Centre. There will be 30 hub partners who are able to support our residents on a variety of issues from mental health to debt advice and employment)

The Council is bringing together a number of partners into the hub who work with older people in the Community such as Age UK,  St Albans Old People’s Trust and Alzheimer’s Society  to provide advice and support on keeping safe; staying independent; having fun and learning and getting connected.

They are running two more pop ups across the district as they recognise that not everyone can get into the city centre and want to make sure all residents have the opportunity to get information and join in activities

  • Tuesday 25 October 11-2pm at Caledon Centre in London Colney
  • Thursday 3 November 9.30- 12pm at Redbourn Village Hall.

These events will run similar to the St Albans event with many of the same partners attending as well as organisations particular to the areas such as Redbourn Community Group and London Colney Parish Council.

Also in attendance at all the events will be the Police, Fire Service and Trading standards. They will be giving out valuable advice on keeping safe and hopefully some freebies too!

Communities 1st are also  helping run these events and there will be free refreshments at each of the events.

There will be art activities at two of the events.  At the event in Redbourn, visitors will be able to decorate a pillow case and in St Albans, you can design a coaster to take home

Everyone is welcome, the events are not just for older people. Carers, family, friends and people who are providing services either voluntarily or paid will find coming along beneficial. No need to book, just turn up! Everything is free!
