Tackling Type 2 Diabetes in St Albans’ South Asian Community

1 in 16 people in the UK have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. This number is growing weekly. And if you are from a South Asian Heritage such as Bangladeshi, Pakistani, or Indian you are four times more at risk of developing the condition than the general population.
The reasons for this higher risk are complex. These reasons include the combined effect of traditional diets being rich in carbohydrates like rice and rotis; a lack of physical activity; obesity and being reinforced by social & cultural norms. These factors can silently tip the scales towards pre-diabetes and eventually, Type 2 Diabetes. They can be thought of as posing a hidden threat, that left unchecked can contribute to diabetes-related complications such as eye problems, heart conditions, and kidney failure.

In St Albans, The Adda Club has been running FREE Diabetes Lifestyle Coaching (DLC) workshops. These culturally sensitive workshops empower individuals to take control of their health and teach them how to effectively manage their Type 2 Diabetes. Led by a Diabetes coach, who has undertaken the transformational journey himself, and who understands the challenges faced by the community, these workshops provide practical tools and knowledge, that make it easier to manage Type 2 diabetes.

Participants learn to navigate food choices, embrace mindful portions, and discover the joy of getting active. In a supportive space, they connect with fellow community members, sharing experiences and building a network that strengthens their resolve. Every small success story at the DLC workshops resonates within our community – a grandmother incorporating healthier recipes, a young father finding his stride with daily walks, a family united in their commitment to well-being – these are the small changes that make a big difference.

If you or someone you know is concerned about Type 2 Diabetes, and need help in understanding the condition, and how to improve managing it, take the first step by registering here. or, if you’re a patient at Hatfield Road Surgery, Summerfield Health Centre, or London Colney Health Centre, ask your GP for a referral to the ADDA CLUB/DLC program.
