Mini Mela Magic: Celebrating South Asian Heritage in St Albans

Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month at St Albans Museum + Gallery

On Saturday 16th August, St Albans Museum + Gallery hosted a vibrant Mini Mela to celebrate South Asian Heritage Month, bringing together the community to explore the rich and diverse cultures of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.

Visitors of all ages dropped in throughout the day to enjoy a packed schedule of craft activities, food tastings, and live cultural experiences. The Adda Club ran a range of engaging activities, including Carom board games, giving guests the chance to try a traditional South Asian pastime and test their skills in a friendly, fun environment.

Food lovers were treated to a variety of tastes from across South Asia. Highlights included a tasting of traditional Bangladeshi street food snack, Jal Muri, a crunchy, spicy, and tangy mix that had guests coming back for more. Nana’s Chutneys also delighted visitors with samples of their delicious chutneys, including some exclusive products available on the day.

Outside the Museum, St Albans Markets joined the celebration with stalls showcasing South Asian heritage, crafts, and products, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The day was a wonderful opportunity for the community to connect, celebrate, and learn about South Asian cultures, reflecting the long and shared history between the UK and South Asia. The Mini Mela was a vibrant reminder of the richness and diversity of our communities, leaving everyone with new experiences, fun memories, and maybe a new favorite snack!

Thank you to everyone who joined us – we can’t wait to celebrate together again next year!
