Worlds Connected: Discover the Hidden Links Between St Albans and the Islamic World

A new exhibition, Worlds Connected, is now open at St Albans Museum + Gallery. Running until 22 February 2026 in the Weston Gallery, it’s full of surprises that show just how connected St Albans has been to the wider world — in ways you might never have guessed.

A Medieval Mystery

Did you know that excavations at St Albans Abbey revealed something extraordinary? Abbot Roger de Norton, who died in 1291, had his heart placed in a case inscribed with Islamic text. It’s a fascinating glimpse into a time when cultures and ideas travelled further than we might expect. Worlds Connected is a multi-sensory journey through science, trade, food, and faith. You’ll see how ideas travelled across continents, how coffee culture spread, and how cultures influenced each other in ways that still shape our lives today, from language influences to coins.

This is a chance to explore stories that connect us, from hidden Turkish baths to the trend of St Albans cafes! The exhbition includes rare Quranic Manuscripts, and objects on loan from the British museum

What makes this exhibition really special is the involvement of the local community. People across St Albans have contributed artifacts, exhibits, and personal stories, helping to bring the history to life, including 20th St Albans Ansar Scouts, Hawa Herts – Hawa Multicultural Services CIC and Al-bayyinah School Their contributions show that connection isn’t just something from the past — it’s alive today, in our local community.

The exhibition includes, personal stories around the Hijab as well as an exclusive photographic essay on on Umrah by Local photographer Monir Ali

Come and Explore

This is an unique exhibition that runs until Ramadan so don’t miss it.
