Promoting Better Health Within the Bangladeshi Community
Promoting better health within the Bangladeshi community is one of the key goals supported by Abbey Health Primary Care Network.
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Summerfield Surgery opened its doors for a fun-filled community event packed with free health advice, health checks, and a cookery workshop led by Monir Ali (@thesugarrebel). The day was all about supporting better Type 2 diabetes prevention and management within the Bangladeshi community in St Albans.
On the menu were Smoked Paprika Lamb Kebabs and an amazing low-carb chocolate berry dessert – healthy, delicious, and diabetes-friendly!
The workshop drew in dozens of young people, including some who had never cooked before. It was wonderful to see so many getting hands-on in the Adda Club Mobile Kitchen, learning how small changes to their diet can make a big difference to their health.
The Adda Club has been running Type 2 diabetes workshops in the community for over four years. Through the Diabetes Lifestyle Coaching Initiative, the team has been raising awareness of healthy eating and supporting South Asian patients to explore tasty, low-carb alternatives.
So far, the programme has helped more than 100 people make positive lifestyle changes and take better control of their diabetes.
It was an inspiring day that reminded everyone how food, community, and learning can come together to make a real difference!

Get Involved
If you’re interested in running a similar health and cookery workshop at your school or community centre, we’d love to help you get started!
Workshops can be tailored to focus on Type 2 diabetes prevention and diet education, or designed especially for young people to encourage healthy eating habits from an early age. These sessions are a fantastic way to bring people together, share practical health advice, and inspire positive change through food.
